Hank Green is an entrepreneur, comedian, novelist and popular science educator, with more than 3.2 million subscribers on YouTube.
Hank boasts a varied resume—he and his brother, John, co-created VidCon, the world’s largest conference about online videos. Hank is the creator of EcoGeek, a blog covering eco-friendly tech, which evolved into Complexly, a educational production studio.
Online, Hank Green is known as an enthusiastic educator and environmentalist.
After Green was suspected of using generative AI to script a video, he admitted that he had, in fact, been using the technology to assist him with content creation—just not in the way critics accused him of.
Why Was Hank Green Accused Of Using AI?
During an appearance on a Complexly YouTube video (titled, “Does Hank Green Shave His Butt?), Green used the phrase “I appreciate the pushback,” sparking suspicions that he was reading from an AI-generated script.
The phrase is commonly associated with ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude—LLM chatbots have been criticized for sycophantic responses, flattering users to increase engagement.
The offending video sparked backlash from Green’s fans, who didn’t expect the YouTuber to use such a controversial technology, especially one associated with ecological destruction and job displacement.
In a since-deleted post on X (Twitter), Green admitted that he had been using ChatGPT “for research on this script,” but clarified that the “pushback” phrase was not written by a chatbot.
However, Green wrote that he had created the video “under a ton of pressure,” and reckoned that he had been “relying too much on generated notes.”
The tweet blew up, sparking debate on X. AI-critics expressed deep disappointment in Green, while AI-enthusiasts were stunned at the backlash.
Some proposed that Green’s credibility had been permanently damaged, citing AI’s tendency to hallucinate and contribute to the spread of misinformation.
Others reckoned that Green’s use of AI as a research tool was perfectly logical, proposing that a good LLM could outperform today’s search engines.
As the backlash intensified, Green deleted his tweet and posted a lengthy, detailed response on Reddit, explaining his personal thoughts on AI and his use of LLMs.
The post makes an interesting read—AI has proved an immensely controversial technology, and Green’s position is more nuanced than most.
What Did Hank Green Say About AI?
Green isn’t exactly running an AI-slop channel on YouTube, but the backlash prompted him to reflect on how LLMs have impacted his creative process.
In response to hallucination concerns, Green clarified that he only uses ChatGPT to “locate papers and other resources for learning about topics.”
As Green puts it, AI is “giving me access to a lot of papers I didn't know existed really fast, but I think that has been to the detriment of my work because it has not given me the freedom to find all of my own ways into and around a topic.”
Green explained that the way in which AI models were trained (using the work of countless creators without consent) “deeply disturbs” him. He also expresses concern at AI’s “climate impacts.”
Green’s biggest worry is that his use of the technology risks “diluting” himself, by speeding up the process of video production. As Green puts it, “making more things does not make me make better things.”
Green concluded by announcing a pause to his YouTube release schedule, vowing to slow down and reevaluate his research process.
The pressure to create content, faster and more efficiently, is likely familiar to any content creator—no matter the social media platform, the algorithm tends to reward frequent posters with more engagement.
Green’s controversy highlights the tension between the creative process (which is often slow and cumbersome), and the high-speed demands of today’s social media landscape.
Generative AI could potentially speed the flow of content, but might end up being a poisoned chalice, diluting the unique voice of creators. Green’s solution, to slow down, seems a wise move—he wouldn’t be the first content creator to suffer burnout.
